A discovery in the Windows 10 Roadmap suggests Microsoft is working on Edge Extensions for Windows 10 Mobile and other platforms.
Extensions have been a big part of the Edge browser expansion that Microsoft has been undertaking this year, adding a new dimension to the web browser that keeps it at pace with rivals like Google Chrome. The company announced the availability of Edge extensions for PC and tablets in March, but there was no confirmation that the feature would be coming to Windows 10 Mobile.
That seems to have changed as Italian website Plaffo has discovered on the Windows 10 Roadmap for Business that Edge extensions are actually being developed for mobile. In recent weeks Microsoft has been allowing those on the Windows Inside Program have been able to test the extensions, but so far developers have only been releasing for PCs and tablets.
The “in development” tag on the Roadmap suggests that Microsoft is still preparing Edge extensions for Windows 10 Mobile, so it is possible the compatibility will come after PCs.
It is also worth noting that while this is solid confirmation, Microsoft has yet to officially announce that it will be bringing Edge extensions to its mobile platform. It’s all but a given that the company will bring this compatibility though, considering Microsoft’s push for Windows to be a Universal Platform working across all its devices.
Extensions are something that would make Edge unique in the mobile space, with neither Apple’s Safari nor Google’s Chrome boasting them in their mobile iterations. As for Edge extensions as a whole, end users should be getting them on their PCs and tablets in the summer, which is when Microsoft will roll out the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
