Are Microsoft’s automatic Windows 10 updates annoying or helpful? We tend to think the latter, but some pro gamers and weather reporters may think differently, so if you are among those frustrated by the automatic update then Microsoft’s new feature may help.

A report from Windows Central suggests that the Windows 10 Anniversary Update will bring with it a feature called “Active Hours”. This feature will allow users to customize when in the day (to the hour) they will be working on their PC, which will mean Windows will avoid update prompts and automatic updates in this time.

Active Hours is a welcome addition as it allows users to avoid a frustrating update that they perhaps did not want at a specific time.

However, the is another side to the coin as while Microsoft is adding Active Hours for Windows 10 users, the company’s push for older machines to upgrade to Windows 10 has become more aggressive.

The company is now automatically setting up updates that will start with little warning. This has been hugely annoying for users who have had their work and entertainment interrupted, and some are upgraded to Windows 10 without even realizing they had agreed to the update.

Windows 10 packs a slew of features that most Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users would be foolish to pass up, but those users should be allowed to choose their upgrade when they want it.

Microsoft has been pushing Windows 10 as a much sharper and more potent alternative to older Windows builds, and with the coming Anniversary Update will enhance the platform further. With Active Hours, users will now be able to combat Microsoft’s automatic updates and schedule Windows 10 for when they want it.

Those with Windows 10 Insider Builds build 14316 and newer can already test Active Hours by heading to the Settings app and the Update and Security tab.
